Location: 欧宝体育 Agricultural Campus (Truro)
Project: Land-based rearing of Atlantic salmon is increasingly becoming an important part of aquaculture in Canada. Sustainable diets that incorporate nutritious and functional ingredients that are optimal for salmon grown in recirculating aquaculture systems are needed to support the industry. Scientific research is needed to advance our knowledge in this area. This project will investigate novel, locally grown, ingredients in diets that are designed for land-based production of salmon. Digestibility, salmon biochemical composition, and salmon gut health will be investigated in this 2-year project.
Two 4-month experiments with Atlantic salmon will be conducted at the Aquatron (in Halifax); however, downstream analyses will be primarily located at the 欧宝体育 Agricultural Campus. In this project, the student will gain experience in salmon rearing, nutritional analyses (protein, fat, fatty acid, amino acid analysis), intestinal histology, and gut microbiome.
Qualifications: Applicants must have a B.Sc. degree in the biological sciences and meet the entrance requirements of the M.Sc. program. Experience in finfish aquaculture an advantage.
Stipend $25,000 per year for two years
Start Date: May 1, 2021
