Following Dal's hosting of the first Eastern Regional Three-Minute Thesis Competition in April, the winning competitors took part in the first Three-Minute Thesis National Competition this month. The 11 grad student contestants were judged by an elite panel based on videos of their regional competition presentations.
Two of the finalists from the Eastern Regional Competition, organized by Dal's Faculty of Graduate Studies, took home awards. Kyle Massia from Saint Mary's University, who finished third in the Eastern Regional Competition, won second place in the national showdown for what judges called a "refreshing social commentary" about political and cultural changes in East Germany after reunification. Also, Kirk Luther from Memorial University, who won the Dal-hosted competition, won the people's choice award for his work exploring law enforcement investigation best practices for interviewing young children.
In first place was Western University鈥檚 Joseph Donohue for his explanation of advances in a portable technology to treat waste water. was chosen from 11 semi-finalists from across Canada.
